TWENTY-ONE

RYLAN FLYNN

When my phone rings again a short time later, I want to ignore it. I want to stay buried in blankets and pillows, safe from the thing down the hall.

But it’s Ford.

“Hey, Ry, you busy?”

I look around my crowded room, feeling a bit foolish for being in bed in the middle of the day. “No. Just hanging at home,” I say, pushing blankets off.

“I, well, we, Tyler and I, wanted to ask you a favor.”

“You want me to come talk to the ghost at the crime scene.”

“You sure you’re not psychic?”

“It was an obvious deduction. And no, I’m not psychic. If I was, I’d play the lotto.” I chuckle at the bad joke. He chuckles, too, just a little.

“So you’ll help us?”

“You know I’d do anything to help you, um, help your investigation.”

“I really appreciate this.” I hear Tyler say something in the background. “What time?”

“That’s up to you. Tonight is good. The spirit will be confused by all the activity at the house. She’s most likely to want to be seen today.”

“Just after dark? The techs should have the scene fully processed by then.”

“I can be there. I’m not sure of Mickey’s schedule, but I’ll check with her.”

“Thanks, Ry. As always, let’s keep this between our little group.”

“I understand.” I do, but I can’t help feeling a little hurt that he wants my involvement kept secret.

He grows silent for a few moments, so long, I wonder if he’s still there. Finally, he asks, “Did you tell anyone about us going to see Miss Melanie the first time?”

The question catches me off guard. “I’m not sure, I think I might have told Dad, but Keaton already knew. Said you told him. Why?”

“Because Kaitlyn knew and I can’t figure out how.”

I do not want to talk about Kaitlyn. “I have no idea. It is a small town. Things get out.” Plus, she’s friends with Lindy.

“Maybe. Let’s just keep this under our hats, okay.”

“I already said I would.” I’m growing irritated. “Look, if it’s too much risk for you, I’ll go with Mickey and just tell you what the ghost says.”

“No way. We are coming, too.”

He sounds excited, too excited. “You like this, don’t you?”

“Like what?” He feigns innocence.

“Like talking to the ghosts. It’s kind of addictive. I should know.”

“Yeah, fine. I like it. Who wouldn’t?”

“I’ll see you tonight,” I say, with a shake of my head and a warm feeling in my chest.
